Umbilical Flow
Had an epiphany this weekend - if thats the right word - dunno, only ever heard captain hook say it.
I found myself saying to a group:
"i had been invited into a large church elders meeting where they said - our people arent growing up and our cells arent working - so i said - Cut The Umbilical, to which the reply came, 'yes but an umbilical is a good thing'. To which i didnt reply( and so wish id thought if this then - but hey - retrospect and al) but thought recently : An umbilical is good as long as you recognise that whatever the child is tethered to exists only as a support to send life giving oxygen/ and nutrients to the child - its not about something coming back - except maybe a few unwanted toxins but i know nothing about biology. Hey - and then the eventual cutting for healthy independance whether you as mum like it or not."

...speaking of which, I remember my geography teacher at school telling us about grapevines. Apparently, the best thing to do when you plant a grapevine is to plant it at the end of the summer when the water table is at its lowest (don't know if he was talking about the UK) and in poor quality soil. Then the vine will spend a long time reaching down into the soil developing its roots system, and not think too early, "ah, here's a nice bit of damp peat: I think I'll stop here and grow upwards now," because when the next dry season comes along, it will die.
I guess the church umbilical cord is a similar concept: put people in a good environment with nice teaching, lively worship and a church social life 24/7 and you will grow babies. That having been said, teaching (if it trains and does not just cause a gain in knowledge) worship and being relational (2 greatest commandments) are key ingredients to the Christian life, with the great commission to go and make disciples who will make disciples being the other.
